SPECIAL AWARD, Metro Kinokulturhaus, main hall, moderation Yasmin Hafedh
FILMTALK Sophie Reyer

The international SPECIAL AWARD of the Vienna Poetry Film Festival is an award after a given festival poem in German language. The award opens up very specific opportunities. Watching different films about the same poems brings the audience in a intimate and very close relationship to the poetic spirit of the poem. On the other hand competing among each other is a very interesting challenge for the participating artists. Last but not least, the variation of interpretations demostrate the creativity of the genre in a very special way.
In 2019 the poem "First" by the Viennese poetess Sophie Reyer has been selected as festival poem. The organizers offered a download link with a sound recording of the poem (including rights and translation) for free. The poem was the required base for the competition. 12 poetry films from all over the world have been selected for the SPECIAL AWARD. The winner will be chosen by the jury. This year´s poetress Sophie Reyer will be present at the screening. We will talk about her writing and creating poetry.

Director: Anushray Singh
Poet: Sophie Reyer
Language: German

Through the coalescing and juxtaposing imagery of stark cold nights to the poignant narration of Sophie Reyer’s Zuerst/First, the visual poem wants to create a hyperreal ‘space’. This hyperreality is done through multi-channel video editing. This noir cold nights of poetic interventions interlay the messages of Zuerst, that reads about the frailty, fragility and the complexity of the human condition which inextricably entwined by the linearity of time and space.

Anushray Singh is an MFA Film and Media Arts candidate at the University of Windsor. He is the director of the three-part documentary ‘The North Was Our Canaan’. His academic work on South Asian diaspora, cultural hybridity and postcolonialism have been presented at universities such as Windsor, York, Ryerson and Brock. His filmography includes avant-garde documentaries and poetry films which uses hyper-exaggerated colour schemes, multi-channel editing and juxtaposition of sound and images.

Director: Diana Taylor
Poet: Sophie Reyer
Language: German

My film incorporates the themes of much of my work which abstracts and defines several images together. In the poetry film "Zuerst" the thread of city life is seen through the weaving of vehicles  which is moving colour footage. This is  interspersed with black and white still images of people who are immersed within the city’s culture.

Diana Taylor worked for the BBC TV as film editor and director. She has been working with Bristol Poets making poetry films since 2009 and her films have been shown in major venues in around Bristol including the Watershed , the Arnolfini , Colston Hall M Shed and the BBC Big Screen. Diana’s poetry films have also been selected for the Portabello Film Festival, London, The Zebra International Poetry Festival Berlin, Annual Programme Without Frontiers Barcelona. Director:Judith Klemenc
Poet: Sophie Reyer
Language: German

Sophie Reyers poem "Zuerst" finds its echo in the self-touch of a female body. A finger stroke with the accompanying words along the lettering, which have determined themselves to the nudity.
Judith Klemenc moves (herself) as an artist with moving and still images (video, installation, performance, literature ... ) between the semi-visible and the semi-audible in order to evoke the indeterminable.

Director: Hans Michael Bittner
Poet: Sophie Reyer
Language: German

The film is based on the idea of translating the keywords into pictures. I found the "hands" in the Accademia in Venice, the "lispel grass" while cycling, the people and the city in the archive and the checked words in a photo of the concentration camp Theresienstadt. Then came the colors, green and orange as main tones, the mood. The attempt to adapt the sound of the voice, the atmosphere of the poem, the message of the words with the colors, the contents and the movements of the images was a great joy.

Hans Michael Bittner, born 1958 in Steyr, Upper Austria. Studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.Painting, animation and video, since 2010 digital animation videos. Participation in numerous festivals in European countries, museum presentations in Paris (Centre Pompidou), Moscow (Museum of Modern Art) Gabrovo (Biennale).

Director: Monica Goldberg
Poet: Sophie Reyer
Language: German with English subtitles

Inside a cupboard — between three feather quilts and a bag of winter jumpers lies a blue and red vinyl sporting bag full of family memories. Approximately once every three years, I unzip the bag and sort through the documents and photographs that my grandparents left behind. This year, I take the files to a local printing and scanning shop — but the weight of the bag is heavy. My arms start to shake and I am unable to operate the scanning machine. I return home defeated. The next evening I open the bag and stare at the faces in the photographs. I am still not 100% sure of some of their names or what actually happened to them. I am still not sure how my mother and grandmother survived. The only thing I am sure of is that the people in these photographs are my relatives. I know that one of them is my biological grandfather and that the others are my grandmothers siblings. I know that they were murdered during the holocaust. I take out my camera and start working. I have no idea how I will weave the photos and poems together in a way that makes sense. I make the decision to try.

Monica Goldberg is an experimental Australian artist, poet and collage maker. Her nonfiction, poetry and photography has been published in a wide variety of journals and magazines. Her prose poetry and Flash Fiction has been shortlisted for international awards (Fish Publishing). Her video poetry has screened at The International Video Poetry Festival in Athens and at the Art Visuals & Poetry Film Festival in Vienna (2017).  She is also a travel writer and has a strong interest in history, genealogy and ecology. She enjoys unravelling complex family stories and bringing lost fragments, photographs, particles (and people) together.

Regie: Angela Proyer
Poet: Sophie Reyer
Language: German

Words that make the face soft AND the body center heavy. The exciting longing for something completely foreign transforms itself in the following second leads to a sense of well-being at the thought of something old familiar. Contrast in colour AND texture, ONE : TWO, Forward - Back; Soft, softer on the softest. Angela Proyer listened first AND then in the following elements -to match the deep sensations triggered by words AND emphasis,is searched, followed this, has transformed the movement AND the metaphors of the words in this nonlinear narrative are set to overlapping levels.

Angela Proyer, an artist full of curiosity and cognitive interest: Painting & process, experimental film, performance, objects, dirty soaps, monobrow service as well as the good old graphic design. Angela Proyer deals with questions about female stereotypes about how societies function (could) and how to break patterns to activate (self-)healing powers. Poet: Sophie Reyer

Shot on Digital, VHS and Super 8mm

Was the world ever in order - what is the order of the world? Bodies and characters interacting eternally, simultaneously. A polyphony of lives real and interpreted; lives curtailed, continuous. "Zuerst" explores the notion of people scattered into time. Charades of fools and villains play out at heritage sites and in seaside towns. Parades and costumes, both serious and inauthentic, are imbued with ominous hilarity. The images highlight the violence and silence of life and deaths. We see words inscribed, exchanged. But Sophie Reyer's poem ‘First’, is the source of the words whose sound reaches us, carrying archaic images, ancient myths, sentiments of beginning. The new, the new day - the new world? The format shifts, a tourists eye view or historical fiction - now, in the past, further in the past, now. Seas are crossed and the persecuted become the prejudiced, the oppressed the oppressor. The tide rushes in. Still, the hurdy-gurdy of thoughts is laughed at - ‘a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings' of the world. Mellifluous or otherwise. We give each other words - we end up back where we started, and starting again.

Adam Maldon, born in Chelmsford, Essex, in 1988. He is a film maker who lives and works in Nottingham. Leaving behind a degree in Film at Middlesex University, Adam went on to study English Literature at Birkbeck College, University of London. His recent films have used poetry to construct narrative across disparate and anachronistic moving image. His work considers migration and nationalism, and the often bizarre middle ground between the emblematic and the individual. Recent collaborators include poet Lila Matsumoto, and her band Cloth.
