8th International Competition of the Goethe Society | Goethe poems in poetry film

Various recent publications have proven that Goethe‘s poems can still receive a strong response in the 21st century. This is undoubtedly true for literature and literary studies. However, does it also apply to other contemporary discourses and media – film, for example, and especially the relatively new poetry film format?

To find out, the Goethe Society Weimar is launching a competition for its 87th Annual General Meeting, in cooperation with the International Poetry Film Festival of Thuringia, which – for the first time – will award the best poetry film based on a Goethe poem. Each of the more than 3000 poems by Goethe can be used as a starting point, also in translation. Participants are free to choose how Goethe‘s poems are adapted, but non-illustrative contributions are expressly welcome.

Filmmakers from any nation and of any age are welcome to participate with a short film of up to 10:00 mins. Films that are produced before 2018 will not be considered.
Entries can be submitted from November 1, 2020, via filmfreeway or a viewing link to mandy.wagner@uni-leipzig.de.

The deadline to submit entries is March 31, 2021.

Please include brief information about yourself and your background.

A jury chaired by German poet Nora Gomringer will decide on the submitted works. The decisions of the jury are final and cannot be appealed; no legal recourse is possible.

The following prizes will be awarded:

1st prize: 1,000 € and three years of free membership in the Goethe Society

2nd prize: 500 € and three years of free membership in the Goethe Society

The prizes will be presented to the winners on May 27, 2021, at the Goethe Society‘s 87th Annual General Meeting in Weimar. The videos will be shown on this occasion.

All submissions for this competition are also considered entries for the Weimar Poetry Film Award of the Thuringian International Poetry Film Festival.
